At least 5 dead after shooting at newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland

Several people have died after at least one person opened fire on the Capital Gazette newspaper building in Annapolis, Maryland, on Thursday afternoon. A shooter has been taken into custody.

Five people are confirmed dead, Anne Arundel County Police deputy chief Bill Krampf told reporters during a press conference hours after the shooting.

"We’ve had a terrible shooting incident here this afternoon," County Executive Steve Shuh added. "There are several people who have died from this incident and several others have been injured." He also confirmed police were interrogating a shooter.

In a second press conference on Thursday, Krampf confirmed the suspect is a white adult male with a "long gun" but wouldn't offer an ID.

He added that investigators found what may have been an explosive device.

"That has been taken care of," Krampf said. "Members of the bomb squad are on scene. We don't anticipate having anymore explosive devices."

In response to the incident, the New York Police Department deployed officers to newsrooms around the city "out of an abundance of caution."

Shots fired were reported in Annapolis at around 2:40 p.m. ET, according to the Baltimore Sun, which owns the Gazette. Phil Davis, a reporter from the Gazette, tweeted that multiple people had been shot.

Anthony Messenger, an intern at the Gazette, also tweeted while the incident was underway.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted that he was “praying for those at the scene.”

President Donald Trump also tweeted about the shooting.
