Ambien maker: No, we didn’t make Roseanne racist

"While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication."

Roseanne Barr had quite the Tuesday: She compared a black Obama official to an ape in a tweet, accused investor and Holocaust survivor George Soros of collaborating with the Nazis, had her show cancelled, then blamed all her bad behavior on Ambien and Memorial Day.

But Ambien doesn’t make people racist, Sanofi, the company that produces the prescription sleep aid wrote in a statement Tuesday morning.

“People of all races, religions and nationalities work at Sanofi every day to improve the lives of people around the world,” the statement on Twitter read. “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”

ABC appears to agree: The network canceled Barr's highly-rated revival show just hours after she tweeted the racist remarks. At that point, producer Wanda Sykes had already decided to leave the show. Barr's agent also cut ties with her because of the tweets.

In her tweets, Barr called Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Barack Obama, the product of the “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes.” She also peddled a conspiracy theory (apparently started by Scott Baio) that Chelsea Clinton is married to George Soros’ nephew. Although Barr later corrected herself, she simultaneously accused Soros himself of being “a Nazi who turned in his fellow Jews to be murdered in German concentration camps and stole their wealth.

Shortly after the original tweet, around 10:30 a.m., she apologized and announced she would be leaving Twitter.

But instead of leaving, she sent out over a dozen tweets apologizing even more and offering up excuses for her comments — including the idea that Ambien made her racist.

“guys I did something unforgiveable so do not defend me,” Barr wrote Tuesday night in a now-deleted tweet. “It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting — it was memorial day too — I went 2 far & do not want it defended — it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn’t but…don’t defend it please. ty”

Much like Barr said she would leave Twitter and then didn’t, she also said she blamed herself, not Ambien.

Correction 12:41 p.m. 5/30: Due to an editing error, Wanda Sykes was incorrectly identified as a co-star on Roseanne Barr's show. She's a producer.
