Rose McGowan says Amazon knew Weinstein had raped her

Actor Rose McGowan, back on Twitter after a temporary suspension, is continuing to name and shame alleged enablers of disgraced Hollywood mega-producer Harvey Weinstein.

McGowan took a big swipe in a series of tweets directed at Amazon Studios and presumably its chief executive, Roy Price, for previously disregarding her claims that she was raped by Weinstein. She condemned the company for working with Weinstein because of his track record of alleged sexual abuse, and specifically called out Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos for Price’s comments.

Update: In a comment to VICE News, Amazon says it has suspended Price as it decides whether to continue working on its projects with the Weinstein Company: “Roy Price is on leave of absence effective immediately. We are reviewing our options for the projects we have with The Weinstein Co.”

Ever since the Weinstein allegations surfaced last week in a pair of stories from the New York Times and the New Yorker, McGowan has been loudly championing victims and criticizing the Hollywood establishment for giving Weinstein a pass for so many years. She has also been circulating a petition that the Weinstein Company board dissolve itself because of its alleged role in enabling Harvey Weinstein’s behavior.

Weinstein has since been forced out of his hit-making production company as allegations of sexual assault and harassment continue to mount. Two high-profile Amazon Studios projects being developed with the Weinstein Company — including a $160 million Robert DeNiro drama and a $75 million TV series from Mad Men creator Matt Weiner — are being “reviewed” by Amazon, according to a statement given to the Hollywood Reporter.

Roy Price, who oversees all of Amazon’s TV and film projects, has reportedly been investigated by Amazon in the past for making sexually aggressive remarks to a producer of the Amazon TV show “Man in the High Castle,” and he tried (unsuccessfully) to get Amazon executives to buy a TV series idea from his fiancee, modeled in part on Price’s own life, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The producer, Isa Hackett, told the Hollywood Reporter Price told her, “You will love my dick” at a dinner in 2015.

Amazon’s biggest hit at the Oscars last year, Manchester by the Sea, nabbed a best actor award for Casey Affleck, who settled lawsuits in 2010 related to his own alleged sexual misconduct.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from VICE News.
