Mexico Deports the ‘Affluenza’ Teen to Texas

Ethan Couch, known as the "affluenza" teen, has been deported from Mexico back to the United States.

Mexico's National Migration Institute released a video on Thursday morning showing Couch being put on a commercial flight in Mexico City headed for Dallas, Texas.

The flight was due to land in Dallas at 11:12 am local time.

Couch was sentenced to 10 years of drug-and-alcohol-free probation for intoxication manslaughter after he killed four people in a driving accident when he was extremely drunk. The sentence was condemned by critics as a case of privilege being rewarded with leniency.

Couch and his mother Tonya, were detained in the Mexican resort city of Puerto Vallarta last month following a two-week-long manhunt that began after he missed a mandatory appointment.

His mother was returned to the United States within days, but Couch initially fought against deportation in Mexican courts.

Couch became known as the "affluenza" teen because a psychologist in his original trial sparked outrage and ridicule by arguing that he was so spoiled by his wealthy parents that he did not know the difference between right and wrong. He was, the defense argued, suffering from "affluenza."

Following his return to the United States, Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson said the 18-year-old Couch will be taken to a juvenile detention center. A judge is due to decide if his case should be moved to an adult court in a hearing in Fort Worth on February 19.
