A professor was shot and killed Monday at Delta State University in Mississippi, a county coroner said, and the school remained locked down after reports of an active shooter on campus.

The university, located in Cleveland, Mississippi, confirmed a fatality on its Twitter account and asked those on campus to stay inside and away from windows.

The Bolivar County Coroner confirmed that the shooting victim was a professor at the university. According to local media, the victim is Ethan A. Schmidt, a professor of history.

On Monday afternoon the University released a statement.  "All faculty, staff and students who have been cleared from academic buildings are being moved to Sillers Coliseum. Students currently in residence halls should remain there," the statement read. "Campus administrators are working to get food, water and counselors to the Coliseum. Police are working to clear all campus buildings, and students, faculty and staff should stay where they are until they are escorted out."

The suspect remained on the loose, the Clarion-Ledger reported, citing the Cleveland Police Department. More than 4,000 students are enrolled in the public university, located 120 miles northwest of Jackson.
