This morning, the House Select Committee on Benghazi is set to grill Hillary Clinton about the 2012 assault on the American diplomatic compound that killed four Americans, including US Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. Democrats have denounced both the panel and the hearing as a witch hunt focused on Clinton that has cost taxpayers more than $4.5 million, while Republicans maintain that the inquiry will help determine what really happened in the lead-up and day of the attack on the US Mission.

Clinton previously testified before the committee in 2013, but she wasn't running for president at the time. The questioning today will likely circle around Clinton's alleged role in failing to increase security and prevent the attack, and scrutinize the legal use of her personal email server during that time and whether she exposed classified information in her emails.

Democrats on the committee are expected to hammer at the politicized nature of the proceedings, noting comments from Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who remarked to Fox News, "Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping." A week later, New York Republican Representative Richard Hanna said, "There was a big part of this investigation that was designed to go after people — an individual: Hillary Clinton." Meanwhile, an ex-Benghazi investigator who identifies as Republican filed a lawsuit claiming that he was wrongfully dismissed because his superiors felt he was not concentrating enough on Clinton.
