The Rundown

Your daily guide to what’s working, what’s not, and what you can do about it.

The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth: The Trump Administration really stepped in it when they declared war on basically all of science. On April 22, lovers of non-alternative facts gathered by the thousands in Washington D.C. and across the country for the Science March, a non-partisan demonstration in support of the scientific community. Many of the participants stressed the urgency of climate change, toxic water conditions, support of science-led government agencies and encouraging the use of vaccines. How's that for a spring cleaning?

Heads or Tails: The world is anxiously waiting on France's presidential coin toss and the two candidates could not be more different. On one hand, there's Marine Le Pen, 48, a far-right nationalist, and on the other there's Emmanuel Macron, 39, a self-described centrist with an interest in strengthening EU ties. This election could be the next Brexit or Trump disruption, and upend what relative stability Europe is still holding on to.

Advocacy Deflate-gate: The philanthropic community is giving Tom Brady the side-eye for his shady partnership with Best Buddies, an organization that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. According to the Boston Globe, Brady has helped raise more than $20 million for Best Buddies since 2011, but their organization has paid $2.75 million to Brady's Charitable trust. While there's nothing technically illegal about Brady's arrangement, it has raised some eyebrows.

The Fate of The Furious: Brooklynites along the Canarsie L train are counting down to till the line's impending 15-month suspension in 2019 between New York and Manhattan, following the damage from Hurricane Sandy. Suffice to say the 225,000 daily riders who rely on the train to get work in the city are pissed, but with the challenge comes an opportunity. On April 25th, local lawmakers and organizations are are holding a press conference in Williamsburg to discuss green alternatives for commuters.
