The memorial site of Melbourne woman Eurydice Dixon was vandalised early this morning. The collection of flowers and candles was set up in Princess Park by Eurydice’s friends, family and strangers following her rape and murder while walking home last week.

In a sickening act, vandals painted offensive 25 meter long markings on the grass beside the site. Police discovered the graffiti at 3.50 AM this morning; it has since been partially washed away by fire crews. What wasn’t able to be removed was covered with white material.

Later today, more than 20,000 people are expected to gather at the sight for the Reclaim Princes Park vigil. The event is not only planned as a way to remember Eurydice, but also make a statement about women’s right to feel safe in public spaces.

Sister vigils are being held in Bendigo, Albany, Ballarat, Geelong and Perth.

Police are urging anyone with information around the vandalism to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
