A recent study has revealed that inner city London has the highest concentration of residents who haven't worked a single job in their lifetime, at nearly three times the UK average. Across Great Britain, the percentage stands at 1.3 percent, as opposed to London's 3.4 percent, equating to 264,000 households.

Chris Goulden, head of policy and research at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, which put together the report with the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, said the figures "point to groups who are struggling to find a way into work" and are indicative of larger problems with job opportunities and availability.

The groups in question, according to the report, are young people seeking employment after leaving school and university, single parents, and disabled people trying to find employment that fits around their personal requirements, as well as recent immigrants and people from ethnic minorities.

Goulden told the Evening Standard: "Never-worked households make up a small percentage of households in the UK, but long-term worklessness is a major problem that can have a devastating effect on physical, mental, and financial health. Employers, schools, colleges, and the government all have a responsibility to create more and better job opportunities which are suitable for people in at risk groups, and provide support for people who need help getting a first step on the career ladder."
