It’s still possible to get a well-paying job without a university degree

Consider learning how to develop apps or get your real estate license

Not everyone is built for academia. And if you’re not, it turns out that you’ll probably be fine.

A new poll from Indeed.com, a popular job search site claims that there are a whole bunch of jobs out there that require some form of specialized training, but not a four-year undergraduate degree.

Indeed.com compiled a list of the 10-best paying jobs without a university degree by mining data from more than one million job postings on their site between May and July of this year. The most popular job posting in Canada that did not, in fact, require a university degree was for an electrician — there were 1,290 postings overall, with an average salary of $62,339.

The median individual income in Canada sits at $33,920 according to 2015 data from Statistics Canada, meaning that half the labour force earns more than $33,290 and half earn less.

Most of the high-paying jobs ranked by Indeed.com requires some kind of technical aptitude, with the exception of jobs in sales, and becoming a real estate agent. Unfortunately if your talents lie in the creative department i.e. music, dance, theatre and art, jobs are usually low-paying and are few and far between.

A quick search of jobs in the field of dance, for instance, revealed only 179 job postings, and most of them were for quick freelance gigs like being a kids party host at a princess party or being a part-time dance instructor.

So yes, if you’re not inclined to pursue tertiary education, it’s very possible to still get a good job, but the major caveat here is that high-paying jobs straight out of high school tend to exist only in technical fields.

““Many trades and tech-related roles are in high demand. Employers are facing skills shortages meaning these roles can offer good career prospects or even self-employment opportunities,” said Jodi Kasten, managing director at Indeed Canada in a statement.
