How Terror Group al Shabaab Rose to Power in Somalia

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to the East African country to find out how the Islamist extremist group became one of the world's most brutal terrorist groups on part two of 'TERROR.'

The Islamist group al Shabaab has been terrorizing the African country of Somalia for years. It's attacked police stations, tourist-filled restaurants, African Union troops, and killed more than 60 people at the Westgate mall attack in Kenya in 2013.

To understand how the extremist faction rose to its modern level of organized warfare, VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to Somalia on the second part of his series TERROR. Watch it above.

TERROR airs on VICE News in the US. Check the first episode of the series, our investigation into al Qaeda in Yemen, online now.
