Democrats Say They Got a DACA Deal with Trump
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced Wednesday they have forged a deal with President Trump to protect almost 800,000 undocumented immigrants covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Earlier this month, Trump ordered that DACA end in six months, and demanded that Congress come up with a solution; many of the president's allies on the anti-immigration right praised that move. The Democrats said they had "agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall." But by Thursday morning, what had actually been worked out was unclear, with Trump tweeting that "no deal was made last night on DACA" and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders saying "excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to."—VICE News

Martin Shkreli Sent to Jail After Facebook Post About Clinton
The notorious "phrama bro," already found guilty of securities fraud, has been sent to jail. US district judge Kiyo Matsumoto ruled Shkreli's Facebook post offering $5,000 for a strand of Hillary Clinton's hair broke bail conditions as he awaits sentencing. Although Shkreli insisted he was "not a violent person," the judge decided the post amounted to "solicitation of an assault."—AP

Nursing Home Deaths Prompt Investigation
Police in Hollywood, Florida, are investigating the heat-related deaths of eight elderly residents found Wednesday at a nursing home that lost air-conditioning due to Hurricane Irma. Florida senator Bill Nelson questioned why no one called 911, describing it as a "scandal of gargantuan proportions." Governor Rick Scott pledged to "aggressively demand answers on how this tragic event took place."—NBC News

One Killed, Three Injured in High School Shooting
Police in Spokane County, Washington, said a student was shot and killed by another teenager with several weapons after he attempted to speak to the attacker. Three others were hospitalized after Wednesday's shooting at Freeman High School but are expected to live. The student gunman has been taken into custody after reportedly being restrained by a school employee.—ABC News

China Supports Myanmar Against Rohingya
China has backed Myanmar over the treatment of its Rohingya Muslim minority, almost 400,000 of whom have left for Bangladesh to escape violence, calling the controversy an "internal affair." Hong Liang, China's ambassador to Myanmar, "strongly welcomed" the "counter-attacks of Myanmar security forces against extremist terrorists." UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres suggested the violence against Rohingya amounted to ethnic cleansing.—Reuters

At Least 25 Killed in Malaysian School Fire
Khirudin Drahman, the head of Kuala Lumpur's fire service, said 23 students and two teachers had died after a fire tore through a school. He added that the service will investigate happened. "It really does not make sense for so many to die in the fire," he said.—Al Jazeera

Puerto Rico Welcomes Hurricane Refugees
Despite suffering its own enormous difficulties from Hurricane Irma's impact, Puerto Rico has agreed to find shelter for displaced people from the neighboring US Virgin Islands. Up to 2,000 people from the islands who lost their homes in the storm were set to travel to Puerto Rico on a cruise ship Wednesday. One US Virgin Island refugee taken across on a plane said the people of Puerto Rico had "big hearts."—Reuters

Russia and Belarus Begin War Games
The Russian military began joint drills with their counterparts in Belarus Thursday morning. The Zapad-2017 operation will simulate a rebellion of "saboteurs" in Belarus. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko accused the exercise of being possible preparation for real military action against Ukraine.—BBC News

Los Angeles Officially Hosting 2028 Olympics
Los Angeles has received official confirmation that it will host the 2028 Olympic Games, confirming what was already assumed. The International Olympic Committee also handed the games to Paris for 2024, marking the first time the organization has made a decision on two cities simultaneously.—AP

'Sopranos' Actor Frank Vincent Dies, Aged 78
Frank Vincent, best known for his roles in The Sopranos and several of Martin Scorsese's movies, died yesterday at the age of 78. "We lost a great character actor and a great man," said fellow actor and friend Vincent Pastore.—The Huffington Post

Marilyn Manson Brands Justin Bieber a 'Piece of Shit'
Marilyn Manson claimed in a Consequence of Sound interview Bieber told him "I made you relevant again" while defending his selling of T-shirts with Manson's image on them. Manson said he was "a real piece of shit in the way he had the arrogance to say that" and added that he got all the profits from Beiber's Manson merch.—Noisey

Canadian Wildlife in Trouble
Almost half of Canada's vertebrate wildlife under study are suffering population decline, according to a study by World Wildlife Fund Canada. Researchers found the average rate of population decline for dwindling species is 4 percent per year.—Motherboard
