On Wednesday morning, students at Colorado University received the following alert from the school: "CU Alert: Armed man with machete is in the Champion Center. Take appropriate protective action." The Champion Center is a sports-medicine facility that also houses the CU football program, and a man with a machete was in fact inside. According to reports, he was shot and killed by police.

In the aftermath, the university released a statement from athletic director Rick George, noting that police had "neutraliz[ed] the suspect" and that no students or staff were injured.

"Regarding the incident this morning in our Champions Center, first and foremost all our student-athletes and staff are safe. We have safety protocols in place, and when everyone received the campus alert, all responded accordingly and the protocols were effective. I want to recognize the Boulder and CU police departments for their prompt and swift response to this incident and neutralizing the suspect. Their quick actions allowed for this situation to be ended without further incident."

Police responded to a 911 call at around 9:15 a.m. local time after two people had a dispute in the parking lot where, according to university police spokesperson Scott Pribble, "one of the people involved did brandish a sharp weapon and was menacing with it," and then went inside the facility. Police found the suspect in a stairwell and shot him he refused to put down the machete.
