John Cho finally plays the leading man again in “Columbus”

The town of Columbus, Indiana, is mostly known for being the hometown of Mike Pence, but it’s also the setting of a mesmerizing new film about death, loss, and architecture.

“Columbus” stars John Cho, and it’s the actor’s first leading role since last year’s #StarringJohnCho meme went viral. People started photoshopping Cho’s face onto movie posters featuring white actors in protest of a Hollywood industry that rarely puts Asian-Americans in leading roles. And while this might not be the blockbuster that some of Cho’s fans may be looking for, Cho thinks this film, in its own quiet way, might be just what the industry needs.

VICE News visited the set of the film and talked with Cho and first-time director Kogonada about the barriers they face in making art that is “universal.”
