Trump is already accusing Mueller's team of meddling in the 2018 midterms

His tweets Tuesday morning followed a dozen over the weekend railing against the Russia probe

President Trump seemed a bit pre-occupied with the Russia probe over the holiday weekend — he tweeted about it almost a dozen times — and it was still top of mind for him Tuesday morning, only with a stunning new baseless charge: He’s now saying the Mueller team will be “MEDDLING” with the midterms.

Offering no proof, Trump tweeted: “The 13 Angry Democrats (plus people who worked 8 years for Obama) working on the rigged Russia Witch Hunt, will be MEDDLING with the mid-term elections, especially now that Republicans (stay tough!) are taking the lead in Polls. There was no Collusion, except by the Democrats!”

Suggesting the probe is politically motivated, Trump didn't happen to mention that special counsel Robert Mueller himself is a registered Republican and was appointed by Trump’s own deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, also a registered Republican. It's the latest in his string of unfounded claims aimed at discrediting the investigation.

Trump hasn’t named the “13 Angry Democrats,” but it appears to refer to the members of Mueller’s team of investigators, which the president has complained are Democrats and critics of his administration. According to PolitiFact, at least 12 people on Mueller’s staff are registered Democrats, out of the 17 members whose identities the special counsel’s office had made public as of March 21.

Mueller is leading the probe into whether Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election with help from Trump campaign aides. Trump has repeatedly argued that the entire investigation is a “witch hunt,” despite the investigation bringing 19 indictments against Trump associates, five guilty pleas, three charges against Russian companies, and a prison sentence. Trump was even warned that Russia would try to infiltrate his campaign.

In a follow-up tweet, the president continued to push the unfounded narrative that the Russia investigation was created by embarrassed Democrats as an excuse for losing the 2016 election.

“Why aren’t the 13 Angry and heavily conflicted Democrats investigating the totally Crooked Campaign of totally Crooked Hillary Clinton,” Trump tweeted. “It’s a Rigged Witch Hunt, that’s why! Ask them if they enjoyed her after election celebration!”

And in his final tweet on Russian meddling on Tuesday morning, the president suggested that he can’t spend any more time focusing on the Russia investigation: he has more pressing priorities.
