George Soros is literally doubling down in his support of stopping Brexit

The billionaire financier is donating more in response to a smear campaign against him.

George Soros is literally doubling down in his support of stopping Brexit.

The billionaire financier responded to a “smear campaign” against his financial support for a push to stop the UK from leaving the EU by pledging another $139,000 to the cause Sunday.

The philanthropist’s support for the Best for Britain campaign, which is lobbying for a revote on Brexit, has been a hot topic since his £400,000 ($558,000) donation to the group was revealed by The Telegraph Wednesday.

The article, which described the 87-year-old as backing a “secret plot to thwart Brexit,” was criticized for playing into anti-Semitic tropes, and echoing the conspiracy theories about the liberal scion that have been promoted by right-wing governments in Hungary and other central European countries.

On Sunday, Soros announced he was responding to the attacks on his anti-Brexit stance in the right-wing press by doubling down on his support.

“I am happy to take the fight to those who have tried to use a smear campaign, not arguments, to prop up their failing case,” Soros told the Guardian.

He said his Open Society Foundation would match up to £100,000 ($139,000), the total raised in a crowdfunding campaign set up for Best of Britain in the wake of last week’s reports. So far, members of the public have pledged more than $85,000 ($118,000) to the effort.

Soros also wrote an article for the Mail on Sunday criticizing the “toxic attacks” and saying it was vital to try change people’s minds about leaving the EU.

While the British government has said that the 52-48 referendum vote in 2015 to leave the EU must be respected, many “remainer” campaign groups and lawmakers are continuing to push for a rethink. Better for Britain aims to bring about a second referendum on the issue, through public advertising campaigns and by lobbying MPs to vote against the government’s final Brexit deal.
