Thousands of Indians want to reinstate a bull-taming festival and ban PETA

A bull-taming ritual is at the heart of statewide protests in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Thousands took to the streets in the southeastern city of Chennai to support Jallikattu, a harvest festival tradition that involves releasing bulls into crowds of people. PETA actively campaigned against the centuries-old custom, and the Supreme Court banned the practice in 2014.

The animal rights group’s advocacy efforts made it a target of protester chants, and so far, police have detained about 200 people since protests began three days ago. To calm protesters, state officials are taking the issue to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
