On Thursday, North Korea’s state-run media aired footage of the U.S. president saluting a North Korean military officer.In the video, the president is seen shaking hands with North Korean military officials. One salutes Trump and then offers his hand for Trump to shake. Trump quickly returns his salute.
Despite Trump's Twitter rhetoric about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, his stance on the hermit kingdom has softened since their meeting earlier this week. After the president shook hands with Kim at the much-hyped denuclearization summit in Singapore, he called him “talented” and a “great negotiator.”“Hey, he’s a tough guy. When you take over a country — a tough country, tough people — and you take it over from your father, I don’t care who you are, what you are, how much of an advantage you have. If you can do that at 27 years old, I mean, that’s one in 10,000 that could do that. So he’s a very smart guy. He’s a great negotiator,” Trump later elaborated on Fox News.The president also downplayed the human rights abuses committed in North Korea.“A lot of other people have done some really bad things,” Trump said. “I mean, I could go through a lot of nations where a lot of bad things were done."North Korea is considered one of the most repressive regimes in the world and is holding hundreds of thousands of political prisoners, according to Human Rights Watch.
