The 5-month battle against pro-ISIS militants in Marawi is over

After 154 days of fighting, the Philippines declared Monday that its battle with pro-ISIS rebels in the southern city of Marawi has ended.

The battle to retake the city resulted in over 1,000 casualties, including 920 militants, 165 troops and police, and at least 45 civilians. More than 300,000 people were displaced from Marawi during the conflict.

The siege began on May 23 after an attempt by Philippines security forces to arrest two local Islamist leaders — Isnilon Hapilon and Omarkhayam Maute — sparked fighting that would become the longest urban battle in the Philippines’ modern history.
