Iran’s Supreme Leader rages at “foul-mouthed” Trump over nuke deal

A few weeks after reports surfaced that Donald Trump’s own secretary of state had apparently referred to him as a “fucking moron,” Trump was labeled a “mentally retarded,” “foul-mouthed president” by Iran’s Supreme Leader, who called on European countries Wednesday to resist the White House’s attempt to renegotiate the nuclear deal reached under Barack Obama.

Iran is still fuming over Trump’s decision last week to “decertify” Iran’s compliance with the 2015 accord, despite partner countries and Trump’s own secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, saying the country was meeting the technical requirements of the agreement.

Trump’s move opened up a new rift between America and its European allies, who have also criticized the U.S. president, albeit with notably more diplomatic language than Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei displayed Wednesday.

Khamenei seized upon the widening gulf between Washington and its longtime European allies.

“The European governments have underlined the nuclear deal’s issue and condemned the U.S. president’s remarks,” Khamenei said. “We welcome this approach, but it is not enough that they only tell him not to tear up the deal.”

Khamenei warned that if the U.S. backs out of the accord, “we will shred it into pieces.”

In refusing to formally acknowledge Iran’s compliance, Trump effectively gave Congress 60 days to draft new terms that would either amend the agreement or risk watching Trump pull America out. The agreement reached under President Obama lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for limitations on the country’s nuclear program.

The other parties to the multilateral deal — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the European Union — have all told Trump to stay in the deal, and even Tillerson himself has openly acknowledged disagreeing with Trump on the subject.

“I will not spend time to respond to the nonsensical comments by the foul-mouthed president,” Khamenei said.
