United passenger’s lawyer says he has a broken nose and a concussion and will likely sue

A passenger whose violent removal from a United Airlines flight went viral will likely sue the airline, his legal team said in a press conference Thursday.

Dr. David Dao suffered a broken nose and a concussion and lost two front teeth when airport police ripped him out of his seat Sunday and dragged him off the plane at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, Dao’s attorney Thomas Demetrio said. The 69-year-old doctor had refused to relinquish his seat when United told him and three other passengers that airline personnel needed it in order to travel to Louisville.

“What happened to my dad should’ve never happened to any human being, regardless of the circumstance,” Dao’s daughter Crystal Pepper said during the press conference, which was held in Chicago.

Several videos of the incident caused outrage all over the world. President Donald Trump even weighed in.

Dao was released Wednesday evening from the hospital, Demetrio said, adding that he will require reconstructive surgery as a result of the incident. The lawyer said United is “responsible,” and that airlines have “bullied” passengers

United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz issued a statement to employees Monday, which United released on Twitter.

“This is an upsetting event to all of us here at United,” Munoz said. “I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers.”
