As president, Donald Trump is swelling more than his bank account. The North Korean army is bulging too, reportedly adding five million “students and workers” to its ranks in recent weeks.State-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported the glut of sign-ups Thursday, claiming they were inspired by Trump’s recent UN speech threatening to “totally destroy” the regime.The “volunteers” said they wanted to defend “the leader and socialism” and crush “U.S. imperialists who are running amuck to ‘totally destroy’ the DPRK,” according to KCNA, another state-run news agency.Experts remain skeptical, noting sudden increases in North Korean army numbers often coincide with an increase in tensions.North Korea already has a disproportionately large army. According to the U.S. State Department, Pyongyang commands more than 1.18 million personnel, making it the fourth largest army in the world behind China, the U.S. and India.Iran, which has a similar size population, has a standing army of around 450,000.Military service in North Korea is mandatory. Or as the constitution puts it, “national defense is the supreme duty and honor of its citizens.”
