Trump is so sad we're tearing down “beautiful” Confederate statues

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Thursday morning to mourn the removal of “beautiful” statues and monuments honoring the Confederacy.

In the aftermath of the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville last weekend surrounding a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, politicians around the country (mostly Democrats) have been calling for the removal of such monuments. There more than 1,500 memorials, schools, bridges, and other public places named in honor of Confederate leaders throughout the United States, most erected decades after the Civil War in the 1920s and 30s.

The city of Baltimore removed its monuments swiftly on Tuesday night following Trump’s comments that “both sides” were to blame for the bloodshed in Charlottesville that left three dead and dozens injured.

White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon seemed to welcome the coming fight over Confederate monuments, telling the New York Times on Wednesday: “Just give me more. Tear down more statues. Say the revolution is coming. I can’t get enough of it.”
