The U.S. Senate voted today to change the filibuster rules for Supreme Court nominees, clearing the way for the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court on a simple majority vote.The so-called “nuclear option” ends years of precedent and changes the rules going forward so future Supreme Court nominees will also be confirmed by as little as 51 votes in the Senate. While everyone saw this coming, the actual changing the rules of the Senate was a complicated bit of parliamentary business on the floor today. It took seven steps to push the Democrats aside and clear a path for Gorsuch.Gorsuch is expected to be confirmed to the Supreme Court as soon as Friday.
