A Boston police officer reportedly assaulted an Uber driver in South Boston Sunday morning and then attempted to drive away with the victim's car. The Boston Globe reported that, according to a police report, Michael Doherty, a cop of 16 years, was arrested on charges of assault and battery, as well as using a motor vehicle without authority.

The driver said Doherty, off duty at the time, repeatedly used racial slurs against Latinos, and began hitting the driver after alleging he was taking the officer to the wrong location. The driver stopped and exited the vehicle, at which point Doherty reportedly chased him around the car and then got in the driver's seat himself. Doherty drove off and the Uber driver flagged down a passing motorist to help him. The police report alleges that the Uber driver then followed the officer until he stopped and exited the vehicle.

Doherty reportedly then also verbally assaulted the assisting man, who is black, using racial slurs. The officer then continued to hit the Uber driver. Doherty has been placed on paid administrative leave and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
