Abortion Rights in Ireland

VICE News travelled to Dublin, where thousands of people marched through the city center, calling for real and realistic abortion access in Ireland.

Ireland is one of the few countries in Europe where abortions are illegal; this is the case in the country unless the pregnancy poses a risk to the mother's life. A recent case involving a migrant who was pregnant as a result of rape and forced to have a C-section tested the limits of Ireland's laws, and has angered the country's pro-choice reformists, who are calling for the repeal of the country's 8th Amendment.

Correction: In the voiceover for this report, it is stated that Ireland is the only country in the European Union where abortions are illegal. In fact, Malta is the only European country that bans abortion in all cases. In Ireland, a woman whose life is at risk by the continuation of a pregnancy is permitted to have an abortion.
