The death toll from the earthquake that hit the Aceh region of Indonesia on Wednesday rose to over 100 people Thursday morning, bringing back memories of a tsunami that decimated the region just 12 years ago.• 6.5 magnitude – The earthquake hit at 5 a.m. local time Wednesday with the epicenter just 19km from the town of Sigli in the northern tip of the island Sumatra – part of the Indonesian archipelago that sits on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire. Despite initial worries, there was no tsunami, but 36 aftershocks have been reported since the initial quake.

• 10,000 affected – According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, over 10,000 people have been affected by this earthquake, with 8,000 people spending Wednesday night in shelters in the Pidie Jaya district alone.
