Indonesian earthquake leaves 100 dead and hundreds more injured

The death toll from the earthquake that hit the Aceh region of Indonesia on Wednesday rose to over 100 people Thursday morning, bringing back memories of a tsunami that decimated the region just 12 years ago.

• 6.5 magnitude – The earthquake hit at 5 a.m. local time Wednesday with the epicenter just 19km from the town of Sigli in the northern tip of the island Sumatra – part of the Indonesian archipelago that sits on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire. Despite initial worries, there was no tsunami, but 36 aftershocks have been reported since the initial quake.

• 102 dead – The death toll as of Thursday morning passed 100, but a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency warned that the figure is likely to rise.

• 600 injured – More than 600 people have been injured with 136 of those in a serious condition, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. Like the death toll, these figures are also likely to rise as many people are still trapped under debris.

• 1,500 rescue personnel The Indonesian government and aid agencies have been quick to respond,and rescue workers continue to sift through the debris left by the earthquake, which destroyed an estimated 260 buildings in the region.

• 10,000 affected – According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, over 10,000 people have been affected by this earthquake, with 8,000 people spending Wednesday night in shelters in the Pidie Jaya district alone.

• 2004 – The latest earthquake to hit this region comes just two weeks before the 12-year anniversary of a 9.1 magnitude quake that triggered a massive tsunami – devastating the region and killing 100,000 people in Aceh alone.
