Robert Mugabe is the world's oldest head of state. This is how he ruled.

Robert Mugabe might’ve taken time out from Zimbabwe’s ongoing political coup to feature at a university graduation ceremony Friday, but the 93-year old’s nearly 40-year rule looks like it’s finally coming to an end.

The country’s military took power Wednesday, confining Mugabe to his residence in the capital city of Harare and vowing to target “criminals” surrounding the 93-year old leader, who they insisted was “safe and sound.”

The apparent coup came a week after Mugabe abruptly fired his former deputy, vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, a politician with broad support among the military. Mnangagwa has appeared poised to succeed the world’s oldest head of state, and after the coup he may finally get his chance.

Mugabe has an understandably polarizing legacy: He’s often earned praise from pan-Africanists and ire from human rights advocates. VICE News takes a brief look back at his decades-long rule.
