Rudy Giuliani takes the job no one wanted: Trump’s lawyer

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has joined Team Trump, legally speaking.

Giuliani, a longtime defender of President Donald Trump and a former federal prosecutor, announced Thursday that he will join Trump’s legal team, which is tasked with dealing with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether Trump’s campaign was involved with Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

“I’m doing it because I hope we can negotiate an end to this for the good of the country and because I have high regard for the president and for Bob Mueller,” Giuliani told the Washington Post.

“Rudy is great,” Trump added in a statement to the Post, which was issued by Jay Sekulow, one of Trump’s current attorneys. “He has been my friend for a long time and wants to get this matter quickly resolved for the good of the country.”

The job isn’t exactly a coveted gig: At least five major law firms have already turned down invitations to help defend Trump. Plus, working as Trump’s lawyer backfired on Michael Cohen, Trump’s longtime personal attorney who had his office, home, and hotel room raided by federal investigators last week.

Sekulow and Ty Cobb, who was famously overheard blabbing about the case at BLT Steak earlier this year, also remain on Trump’s legal team.
