Casey Affleck, one time Oscar winner and alleged groper, will not present the award for best actress at this year’s Academy Awards, apparently out of concern that his presence onstage might be a distraction from his female colleagues’ cinematic performances.Affleck, who won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2017 for his role in “Manchester by the Sea,” is breaking with one of Tinseltown’s time-honored traditions, wherein the previous year’s Best Actor winner announces the winner for Best Actress.The allegations stem back to 2010, when two female crew members from the set of the 2010 mockumentary “I’m Still Here” filed a lawsuit accusing Affleck of groping and abusive and intimidating behavior. One of his accusers, Magdalena Gorka, alleged that she woke up in the middle of the night to find Affleck in bed with her, touching her without her permission.“He had his arm around her, was caressing her back, his face was within inches of hers and his breath reeked of alcohol,” according to the lawsuit. “She did not know where he had touched her while she was sleeping.” After asking him to leave multiple times, Gorka says he stormed out, “slamming the door in anger.”When he collected his award in 2017, the allegations against Affleck were already common knowledge. But the recent #MeToo movement has shaken Hollywood to its core, laying bare decades of systemic sexual misconduct and cover-ups, and ending dozens of once-powerful mens’ careers.“Casey has a lot of respect for the Oscars,” sources told TMZ. “And doesn’t want the Best Actress category to be about him presenting. We’re told he wants the attention to be focused on the nominees… and doesn’t want his presence to impact the winner’s special moment.”
