GOP congressman wants cops to arrest undocumented immigrants at the State of the Union

At least 25 DACA recipients will be at the Capitol as guests for the big event Tuesday night

A Republican congressman is calling for a roundup of “illegal aliens” at the State of the Union Tuesday night — perhaps because he’s heard there will be Dreamers in attendance, invited as guests of some members of Congress.

Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to announced that he’d gotten in touch with Capitol Police and the Department of Justice to ask whether they’d be checking IDs at the door, with the purpose of weeding out and arresting any “illegal aliens.”

A number of lawmakers have announced they’ll be bringing immigrants as guests, including many Dreamers (undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children), to President Trump’s first SOTU address, where many of the guests have been invited for the purpose of making a political point.

The fight over the status of the Dreamers led to a government shutdown earlier this month. Congress now has until Feb. 8 to decide the fate of the Dreamers. The Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, estimates that over 17,000 of the roughly 800,000 Dreamers have lost their protected status since the Trump administration announced last September it would be ending the DACA program.

At least 25 DACA recipients will be at the Capitol for the event Tuesday night, according to CNN: Both Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat from Nevada, and Rep. Seth Moulton, a Democrat of Massachusetts, plan to bring Salvadorans with Temporary Protected Status. Trump has revoked protected status for some 200,000 Salvadorans. They’ll have until September 2019 to leave the country.

Gosar’s colleague from Arizona, Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva, will be bringing along Arisaid Gonzalez Porras, a DACA recipient and a freshman at Georgetown, who’s become vocal about immigrants rights as DACA has come under fire. Also in attendance will be Adrian Escarate, a professional tennis coach and college graduate, alongside Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo of Florida.

This isn’t the first time Gosar has voiced his hard-line immigration views. He believes that undocumented immigrants in are disproportionately responsible for violent crime in his state, according to AZ Central.
