This nonprofit caters to whites in post-apartheid South Africa

Fed up with political dysfunction, a nonprofit that’s been accused of being racist is trying to do the government’s job.

The South African nonprofit AfriForum is among several groups working to fill the gaps in basic services like security and sanitation, amid spiraling government corruption and dysfunction. But AfriForum's growing white membership — it was formed to protect the white Afrikaans minority in a country still struggling to overcome its legacy of apartheid — has sparked controversy and led some South Africans to label it as racist.

The nation's president, Jacob Zuma, has failed to address the lingering inequality between white and black South Africans post-apartheid. But that’s just one of the issues plaguing his government. Corruption and political dysfunction have gotten out of control during Zuma’s seven years in power, leaving many without essential services.

Nongovernmental organizations like AfriForum stepped in years ago to fill the gaps. As a result, Afriforum membership has skyrocketed.
