Las Vegas gunman's girlfriend says she has no idea why he did it

The girlfriend of the gunman who killed 58 people and wounded about 500 others at a Las Vegas country music festival this weekend, said on Wednesday that she had no idea he was planning to carry out the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

“He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen,” Marilou Danley said of the gunman, Stephen Paddock, in a statement read by her lawyer. “I am devastated by the deaths and injuries that have occurred, and my prayers go out to the victims and their families and all those who have been hurt by these awful events.”

Danley said Paddock bought her a plane ticket to the Philippines, where she was staying with family the day Paddock opened fired on thousands of people from the 32nd floor of his hotel room.

Investigators have not offered any theories on why Paddock did what he did, though the evidence so far suggests he took enormous time and care to set up his murderous plan. He had 23 guns in his hotel room, law enforcement officials said, and a dozen “bump stocks” — legal devices that allow semi-automatic assault weapons to fire like machine guns — that enabled him to fire 90 rounds every 10 seconds, a New York Times audio analysis uncovered. He also used surveillance cameras to watch out for the police officers he knew would respond to his rampage.

Paddock, a 64-year-old retired accountant, was a substantial high-stakes gambler and had no criminal history.
