LA prosecutors reviewing sexual misconduct cases against at least three Hollywood power players

Authorities across the globe are currently investigating Hollywood men in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

Police have sent criminal cases against movie producer Harvey Weinstein, actor Steven Seagal, and agent Adam Venit to Los Angeles County prosecutors, a spokesperson for the LA District Attorney’s office confirmed to VICE News.

Authorities say all three cases all involve sexual misconduct.

The cases are only some of a few now pending before prosecutors’ offices in California, and across the country, as more and more explosive allegations about high-powered men preying on subordinates continue to surface in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

Prosecutors say the cases against Weinstein, Seagal, and Venit will remain under review as their offices determine whether to actually press charges against any of the men. Attorneys typically only bring charges if they believe they can prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.

Here’s everything we know so far about the investigations, and the allegations that prompted them:

Steven Seagal

The Beverly Hills Police Department sent Los Angeles prosecutors the case against Seagal back in late January, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office spokesperson said. While the office’s spokesperson declined to provide any details about the case, actress Regina Simons told The Wrap that Seagal raped her in 1993, when she said she was 18 years old and serving as an extra on one of his movies. Another woman, former model Faviola Davis, also said that Seagal groped her during a 2002 audition.

Both women said they filed complaints last year with the Los Angeles Police Department, which told Variety that it’s also investigating a 2005 incident involving Seagal.

Seagal has not publicly commented on the matter.

Harvey Weinstein

Los Angeles prosecutors are currently reviewing at least three cases against Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 80 women, including multiple allegations of sexual assault harassment and rape, since October. The Beverly Hills Police Department also reportedly sent a pair of cases involving Weinstein to Los Angeles prosecutors in January, while United Kingdom and New York police are also looking into allegations of misconduct against Weinstein.

Weinstein has consistently denied all allegations of non-consensual sex.

Adam Venit

Los Angeles police sent the case against Venit to the district attorney’s office on Tuesday. Again, no details were provided about the case, but actor Terry Crews accused Venit — a powerful agent at William Morris Endeavour — of sexually assaulting him at a Hollywood party in February 2016. In a series of tweets in October, shortly after the New York Times published its exposé on Weinstein, Crews tweeted that a “high level Hollywood executive” had groped him and leered at him.

“I have never felt more emasculated, more objectified,” Crews told Good Morning America in November. “I wake up every morning wondering, ‘Did this really happen?’”

In a lawsuit Crews later filed against Venit and William Morris Endeavour, the agency maintained that it “decisively addressed and punished the conduct Mr. Crews alleges that Mr. Venit engaged in.”
