Harvey's death toll rises as Houston continues to flood

Hurricane Harvey's death toll rises as Houston continues to flood.

Over 50 inches of rain have fallen in some parts of Texas since Harvey hit the coast on Friday, breaking rainfall records for the U.S. mainland. Though Harvey was classified as a Category 4 hurricane when it first touched land, it has since been downgraded to a tropical storm. Even so, experts predict many more inches to fall by Saturday.

So far, as many as 18 people have been killed by the storm. The police and the National Guard have saved over 3,500 people, but it’s still unclear how many people are trapped in their homes. Officials estimate that Harvey will force 30,000 people into shelters, and that 450,000 people will ultimately require some sort of disaster relief.
