South Carolina school shooting suspect allegedly murdered his father

A teenage gunman allegedly murdered his father on Wednesday before opening fire at Townville Elementary School in South Carolina, injuring two students and one teacher before being arrested by police.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, authorities from Anderson County confirmed that Jeffrey Osborne, who was found dead several miles from the school, was the alleged shooter's father.

Authorities said that one student and a teacher were transported by ambulance to AnMed Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. A 6-year-old boy was taken by helicopter to the trauma center at Greenville Memorial Hospital and is in critical condition.

Anderson School District 4 superintendent Joanne Avery said that she believed the students were in recess when the gunman, who remains unnamed, entered the school premises with a handgun at about 1:45pm.

The shooter was arrested within 15 minutes.

Officials wouldn't say whether the shooter had any relationship to the students or teachers at the school, and added they were still investigating possible motives.

Students were evacuated by bus to Oakdale Baptist Church in Townville, where family members were asked to wait for their children. School has been cancelled at Townville Elementary for the rest of the week, and the school district is making counselors available to students.
