Americans mourn the 59 people killed in Las Vegas

Amid the outpourings of grief and sympathy for the victims of the Las Vegas massacre Sunday, the nation’s fierce debate on gun control has sparked up again.

The gunman rained down bullets in what sounded like automatic fire for some 70 minutes, leaving 59 dead and over 500 injured at a crowded concert site on the Vegas Strip. Police found at least 23 weapons in the hotel room where the gunman was shooting from and where he apparently shot himself before authorities burst in.

According to a Mother Jones database, this was America’s 7th mass shooting of the year. And though some said it was too early to talk about gun control, some congressmen gave impassioned speeches on Monday, pleading with Congress to finally take action on the issue.

In an interview with VICE News, the Nevada NRA chief, Don Turner, warned against pushing gun control, saying “In the emotion of the moment, there’s a tendency to push anti-gun agendas. We need to find out what really happened.”
