Video appears to show U.S. military drive-by shooting in Afghanistan

Video appears to show American servicemember shooting into the window of a civilian truck

The U.S. military is launching an investigation into a video that surfaced online purportedly showing an American servicemember shooting into a civilian truck as the armored vehicle passed by.

The footage, which appeared to be captured by a helmet-mounted camera, could indicate a violation of the rules of engagement in the Afghan war and undermine the U.S. ‘s mission in Afghanistan.

The 3-minute and 9-second video, first reported by Politico, was uploaded anonymously under the title "Happy Few Ordnance Symphony.”

The video shows a compilation of clips of servicemembers firing grenade launchers and rockets among other weapons to the soundtrack of Kendrick Lamar’s song “Humble.” At 0:20, a servicemember appears to fire his weapon into the driver’s window of a civilian truck. The window shatters, but it is unclear if anyone was injured. It is impossible to determine the context of the clip because the scenes before and after the shooting are unrelated.

Col. Thomas, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command confirmed to VICE News that an investigation had been launched and that the procedural steps to file the paperwork and appoint investigators to the case were happening in real-time.

VICE News was not able to verify the authenticity of the video before the publishing of this article.

Gen. Joseph Votel, commander of U.S. Central Command told Fox News in a statement that he was “disappointed” in the video and “also concerned that the American people, our Coalition partners, the Afghan government, and the Afghan people will believe that American service members are callous and indifferent to the horrors of war or the suffering of innocent people trapped in conflict.”
