Swiss Police Say They Have Arrested Canada's 'Most Wanted Bank Robber'

"The Vaulter" — who has never been publicly identified — had been wanted under an international arrest warrant in connection with 22 bank robberies in the last five years.

A 53-year-old man driving a compact car on a Geneva street was arrested last night, and he now stands accused of being Canada's "most wanted bank robber."

The bandit, who has yet to be named, earned the distinction thanks to his technique of jumping over bank counters like a hurdler, with a gun in hand, for his "takeover" style heists.

Geneva police spokesman Jean-Philippe Brandt said the suspect, a French-American citizen, was intercepted by plainclothes police on Tuesday and taken into custody without incident, the Associated Press reported.

"We received some information that this guy would be in Geneva for several hours and so we just surveyed him and when it was the best moment to arrest him we arrested him," Jean-Phillipe Brandt told CP24. "It happened in a very peaceful way. It was a very discreet and very calm situation.

He is being held pending extradition procedures, the AP reported.

He first struck a bank north of Toronto in 2010, but he's hit branches across Ontario and as far as Calgary.

In May, police in Ontario and the Canadian Bankers Association upped the ante, offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

"I think it's fair to say he's elusive," York Regional Police Det. Sgt. Mike Fleischaker said at the time.

The Vaulter has apparently donned a variety of outfits for his robberies, dressing up as a construction worker with hardhat and orange reflective gear, wearing baseball caps, and in one instance looking jaunty in a beret and scarf.
