Las Vegas gunman fired 200 bullets at security guard before killing concertgoers

Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock shot and wounded a hotel security guard six minutes before opening fire on concertgoers, officials revealed Monday.

Authorities had previously said Jesus Campos was wounded after Paddock opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest festival, which killed 58 and injured hundreds.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters Paddock unloaded more than 200 bullets through his hotel room door as Campos approached.

It is unclear whether the new timeline sheds light on Paddock’s motive — something police are struggling to pin down.

Lombardo said Paddock had three security cameras set up inside and outside his hotel suite. The 64-year-old opened fire when he saw Campos moving towards his door, spraying bullets down the hall and catching the security guard in the leg.

A short time later, Paddock opened fire on the festival for around ten minutes. Police do not know why he stopped, though Lombardo suggested he likely had plans to escape.

As well as shooting into the crowd, Paddock also fired at jet fuel tanks at the nearby McCarran International airport.
