FBI agents’ texts call Congress “less than worthless” and “contemptible”

Newly disclosed text messages between two FBI employees who were lovers reveal immense adoration for then-FBI Director James Comey and contempt for Congress.

“God he’s SO good,” wrote then-FBI agent Peter Strzok on July 7, 2016, the day Comey testified before Congress about the agency’s decision not to press charges against Clinton over her use of a private email server at the State Department.

“I know,” responded FBI lawyer Lisa Page. “Brilliant public speaker. And brilliant distillation of fact.”

“Yep,” responded Strzok. “[Republican Rep. Jason] Chaffetz is in over his head.”

“I was just about to say the same thing.”

This exchange counters the White House’s insistence that the FBI’s reputation was in “tatters” and agents disapproved of Comey when Trump decided to fire him last May. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has defended that decision by saying that “countless” agents had applauded the president’s move.

Chaffetz was the chairman — he has since stepped down — of the House Oversight Committee, which was interviewing Comey a few months before the election.

“God l hate Congress. So utterly worthless,” Page wrote.

“Less than worthless,” Strzok replied. “Contemptible.”

The two FBI employees are at the center of a controversy over what many Republicans perceive as a bias against President Trump in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe of the campaign’s possible ties to the Kremlin. Trump himself declared that the latest text messages are "BOMBSHELLS." Strzok and Page formerly worked on the probe, and the two expressed contempt for Trump in text messages and discussed their “depression” in the days following the election. Strzok was removed from working on the probe when Mueller learned of the texts.

Some other highlights from the latest texts from a trove of thousands between the pair, which first came to light in December:

• “I love our Director,” Strzok wrote to Page. She responded: “I know. I do too.”

• Strzok: “Roger Stone is horrible.”

• Page: “I’m having a hard time deciding what is appropriate for a weekend with Director. Have on grey jeans, navy v-neck, tan cardi. Brown loafers? Brown boots?”

• Strzok wrote to Page in September 2016: "potus wants to know everything we're doing."

Trump’s firing of Comey, considered a potential effort to obstruct justice, is what eventually led to Mueller’s appointment as special counsel to continue the Russia probe.
