Ted Cruz staring at a photo of Beto O'Rourke tells you what kind of week he's having

You can almost hear Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sounds of Silence.”

If you look closely enough at the photo Republican Sen. Ted Cruz was apparently staring at on a recent flight, you can almost hear Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sounds of Silence” in the background.

Cruz, who had a particularly difficult Monday, was photographed on a morning plane ride hunched over his phone while looking at what appeared to be picture of his bass-playing political opponent, Democrat Beto O’Rourke, according to Politico Playbook. Over the past few weeks, he’s been steadily chipping away at Cruz’s small polling lead.

Hours later, Cruz would be heckled out of a Washington, D.C, restaurant for his response to the sexual assault allegations against President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. “We believe survivors,” protesters chanted at Cruz and his wife, Heidi, in a video that went viral. One of the protesters can be heard off-camera saying: “Beto is way hotter than you, dude.”

The protesters targeted Cruz because of his longtime friendship with Kavanaugh, who's going through the confirmation process for a lifetime seat on the nation’s highest court. Earlier this month, Cruz accused Democrats of “politicizing” Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing as revenge for the 2016 presidential election.

"Are you going to confirm your best friend, Brett Kavanaugh?" one protester can be heard shouting. "Ted Cruz and Kavanaugh are best friends!"

Monday’s protest wasn’t the first time Cruz’s appearance has been negatively compared to his opponent’s. When the Texas GOP tried to target Beto for wearing a dress during his band days, users juxtaposed the image with old photos of Cruz.

O’Rourke’s good looks aren’t the only thing that might be bringing Cruz down this week either. On Tuesday, the New York Times conservative columnist Bret Stephens called the Texas Republican a “serpent covered in vaseline” and “the type of man who would sell his family into slavery if that’s what it took to get elected.”

Cruz triggered an accidental backlash against himself last week by tweeting out a video meant to mock O’Rourke but ended up baffling many Twitter users. The footage showed O’Rourke condemning a Texas police officer who shot an unarmed black man in his own apartment.
