Snapchat’s “Russian bot” filter trolled Facebook on April Fools’ Day

Cyrillic text replaced the standard notification that someone “updated their profile picture,” and “Your Mom, a bot, and 2 others” liked the new image.

Snapchat took a swipe at Facebook on April Fools’ Day by taunting the company over its Russian influence problem.

Snapchat offered users a Facebook-styled filter for their photos that mimicked a new Facebook profile picture post. In the filter, Cyrillic text replaced the standard notification that someone “updated their profile picture,” and “Your Mom, a bot, and 2 others” liked the new image.

The filter poked fun at the political crisis plaguing Facebook over the last several months. A February indictment as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe outlined a vast Russian propaganda machine to undermine the 2016 U.S. election that exposed millions of Americans to Russian ads on Facebook.

Most recently, a whistleblower from Cambridge Analytica — which worked for the Trump campaign at one time — detailed how the data analytics firm accessed 50 million Facebook users’ data without their knowledge. Zuckerberg is expected to testify before Congress about the scandal this month.

This year wasn’t the first time Snapchat trolled Facebook for April Fools. Last year, Snapchat offered users an Instagram interface-style filter for photos — a jab at Facebook, which owns Instagram, for copying Snapchat with features like Instagram stories.
