Police opened fire on a man who refused to put down a rock at Love Field airport in Dallas on Friday in an incident that prompted a lockdown and evacuation, police and witnesses said.

Video of the incident shows it occurred near a baggage claim area at street level. Five shots are heard on the video, followed by a volley of several more. Shouts of "get down" can be heard and an officer with a pistol can be seen.

The airport was put on lockdown and automobile traffic was halted on routes to the airport, which is a major center for Southwest Airlines, a few miles from central Dallas.

Bryan Armstrong, a witness who said he took the video, told CNN the man who was shot had a rock in his hand and police ordered him to drop it as he walked toward them. Police shot the man when he did not comply, Armstrong said.

Randall Blankenbaker, an assistant Dallas police chief, said the incident began with a "domestic disturbance between a lady and her childrens' father."

"A black male suspect involved in the disturbance used rocks to attack the lady," he said. "One of our officers was alerted, came to the aid of the lady and was rushed by the gentleman with the rock."

Blankenbaker said the officer was able to separate himself but the man charged again and the officer shot him.

The man has been transported to a local hospital, Blankenbaker said, adding that he did not know his condition. The officer was not harmed.

Love Field administrators said the airport had reopened after a brief closure, but that passengers could expect a three hour wait in the security line.
