Homicides in Chicago skyrocketed in 2016

More than 760 people were killed in Chicago in 2016, the most homicides in the city in nearly 20 years. The Chicago Police Department reported 762 homicides last year, up from 468 in 2015 — a jump of 45 percent. The number of shooting victims skyrocketed accordingly, from 2,939 in 2015 to 4,331.

As 2017 began, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson announced a three-pronged “enhanced crimefighting strategy” for the city: revamping sentencing guidelines for repeat gun offenders, data-driven enforcement, and renewed community engagement and partnership programs.

Three people were reported killed in the city on Jan. 1.
