Chance the Rapper wants you to know he doesn't support Trump

Chance the Rapper wants you to know he in no way supports President Trump.

The rapper felt the need to clear up any confusion Friday after he'd come to the defense of his friend Kanye West when West took flak for showing his support for Trump by tweeting a signed MAGA hat.

"Black people don't have to be Democrats," Chance tweeted, adding, "Next president gon be independent."

That caught the notice of President Trump, who was reveling in the vocal support he was getting from West:

But Chance, who has 7.6 million Twitter followers, said his defense of Kanye should not be received as an endorsement of Trump.

"Unfortunately my attempt to support Kanye is being used to discredit my brothers and sisters in the movement, and I can't sit by and let that happen," he wrote.

He goes on to list the reasons why he won't be joining Kanye on the Trump train:

• "I'd never support anyone who made a career out of hatred, racism and discrimination."
• "I'd never support someone who'd talk about Chicago as if its hell on earth and then take steps to make life harder here for the most disenfranchised among us."
• "My statement about black folks now having to be Democrats (though true) was a deflection from the real conversation and stemmed from a personal issue with the fact that Chicago has had generations of democratic officials with no investment or regard for black schools, neighborhood or black lives."
