Pioneering Australian senator breastfeeds at mic in parliament

Australian Sen. Larissa Waters became the first politician to breastfeed while speaking in Parliament Thursday.

The co-deputy leader of Australia’s Greens Party made headlines in May when she first breastfed her daughter inside the chamber. On Thursday, she one-upped herself. While moving a motion about black lung disease for coal miners, Waters continued to feed her 14-week old baby, Alia Joy, at the microphone. The multitasking drew smiles from others in the chamber, and Waters celebrated it after on Twitter:

She also called out her detractors:

Waters has called for more women and parents in parliament, and for more family-friendly workplaces.

The parliament changed its rules last year to allow mothers to breastfeed in the chamber.
