Manafort and Gates plead "not guilty" to all of Mueller's charges

Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates both pleaded “not guilty” to all charges brought forth by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Both men turned themselves in to the FBI earlier Monday morning, shortly after a grand jury approved the first charges in Mueller’s wide-reaching investigation into Russia’s influence in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Neither Manafort or Gates, who was represented by a public defender at the hearing, spoke to the press.

Prosecutors recommended Manafort’s bail be set at $10 million and Gates at $5 million. Both men had their passports confiscated, and will likely face house arrest.

The indictment of Manafort and Gates is the first indication of how Mueller will carry out his task of uncovering Russia’s influence in last November’s election. While these charges do not mention President Trump by name or election meddling per se, they arrived the same day we learned that former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to the FBI about his ties to the Kremlin. Papadopoulos was arrested in July and has been cooperating with Mueller’s investigation since then.
