Actress turned politician Cynthia Nixon is all for legal weed.At a recent fundraiser, the Democratic candidate for governor of New York reportedly pumped her fist and said “Yes!” when asked about recreational marijuana, people who attended the event told the New York Times. If elected, Nixon said, she will seek to legalize weed so that it could generate tax revenue for the state.Nixon’s opponent, current Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, has a long history of opposing recreational marijuana. Last year, Cuomo called marijuana a “gateway drug.” Earlier this year, however, he acknowledged the turning tide of legalization and ordered a study to start a conversation about the topic.Though Nixon has little policy experience and scantly-outlined policy proposals, she has emerged as a more progressive alternative to Cuomo, thanks in part to her celebrity and activism. Nixon has been an outspoken advocate for equitable education in New York for a decade, and she has already pointed to New York City’s troubled subway system as a major campaign topic.
