The 38th Annual News & Doc Emmy nominations were just announced and VICE News Tonight, after being on air for only nine months, received a total of six nominations for four segments released in 2016.

Filipino president Rodrigo Duterte's ruthless war on drugs has shocked the world. Since he took office in June, more than 3,000 people have been killed, including untold numbers of innocent victims.

The UN issued a new warning about the growing humanitarian crisis in Mosul. In the six weeks since the offensive began, conditions are worsening dramatically for the people who live there: an estimated 600 people have been killed and 1200 more have been treated for traumatic injuries.

**_The Rise of Carfentanil_** &#x2013; nominated for &#x201c;Outstanding Hard News Feature Story in a Newscast.&#x201d;

Overdoses from heroin and other opioids now kill an average of 78 Americans every day. VICE News correspondent Dexter Thomas looked at the growing risks of synthetic opioids by visiting an Ohio county that’s been experiencing an average of 20 to 25 overdoses a day.

The Harris County coroner told him the recent overdose spike is likely attributable to carfentanil, a veterinary drug used in elephant tranquilizers. And a DEA chemist said the synthetic opioid is so potent that 2 milligrams could kill 100 people.

But a Cincinnati heroin addict said he’s willing to risk exposure to carfentanil, which dealers are using to cut heroin. “It worries me a lot, you know, knowing that it’s out there,” Brandon Harris said. “[But] as an addict, it’s worth the risk.”

The DEA confirms carfentanil use is spreading and has been found in six states so far.

Ultra-Potent Synthetic Heroin Is Spreading Across America (HBO)

**_Friday Night Lights_** &#x2013; nominated for &#x201c;Outstanding Feature Story in a Newscast.&#x201d;

“The police’s duty is to protect and serve, and if you feel like they’re not doing that, then you need to speak up,” Berkeley High School senior Armani Turner-Jenkins told his teammates in a locker room meeting.

He’s among the young people around the country turning what was a national controversy started by NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick — who hasn’t been standing during the national anthem to protest the treatment of African-Americans by police officers — into their own local protests.

“All of us were thinking about it soon as we saw Kaepernick do it one day,” team captain Jaden Lewis told VICE News correspondent Jay Caspian Kang. “We’re like, ‘Let’s stand up with these other teams, with these other players. Let’s take it serious.'”

Protests against racism are not new to Berkeley students. Last year, a student left a threatening message on a computer in the school’s library, prompting more than half of the student body to walk out of class. In 2014, a noose was left to hang on a tree on campus.

“That’s my history that you’re kind of just disrespecting and putting it out there, and it’s not funny,” team captain Brandon Bailey said.

The Berkeley football team, inspired by Kaepernick and with the support of their coach, decided to take action in the form of a protest.

“We’re kneeling down to stand up for black oppression and police brutality, and with us locking arms it shows that we’re doing it as a team and we’re united in what we’re doing,” Bailey said.
